  • Indigenous People in Australia

Australia’s Indigenous people have lived in the region for more than 60,000 years. They have lived in harmony with the land and the sea, utilising its resources, never taking more than what was needed to survive, and form an integral part of the environment.

Indigenous Australians are a proud people, filled with passion, humour and enthusiasm. The youth are the future and we look to their success. As much as Indigenous Australians are a part of the past, so they are too, a part of contemporary, modern Australian society.

Indigenous Australians are proud to be the traditional land owners of this country.

  • Reconciliation Australia - What is Reconciliation ?

Our vision is for an Australia that recognises the special place and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians, values their participation and provides equal life chances for all.

Reconciliation involves justice, recognition and healing. It’s about helping all Australians move forward with a better understanding of the past and how the past affects the lives of Indigenous people today.

Reconciliation involves symbolic recognition of the honoured place of the first Australians, as well as practical measures to address the disadvantage experienced by Indigenous people in health, employment, education and general opportunity.

  • Indigenous Australian Athletes

Many aborigines have excelled in sport and represented Australia at the highest level. These include Lionel Rose (world boxing champion), Evonne Goolagong (winner of the French Open and Wimbledon) and Nova Peris-Kneebone (winner of Olympic gold medal in hockey).

Cathy Freeman lit the Olympic Flame in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games' Opening Ceremony. She then went on to win the 400 m title in front of her home crowd. She is the only person to to do both at the same games. Cathy is regarded as a role model for her people, and many Australians regard Cathy as a symbol of national reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.
